FIVE
I RODE OVER TO THE PARTY WITH MINDY, LAURA B., and Olivia, a.k.a. Liv. We got there just past twelve thirty. I was surprised to find Dex Holcombe waiting for me at the door.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” he said, grabbing my hand and leading me into the room. “The party’s just getting started.”
It was funny, because back home the party would have been already over three hours ago. Teens in Mildew rarely stayed out past nine or ten at night. It wasn’t because our parents were strict. There was simply nothing to do. We didn’t have a movie theater or a shopping mall or any underage clubs. Come to think of it, we didn’t have any overage clubs, either. But at least if you were twenty-one you could go out drinking in one of Mildew’s four bars. The rest of us were totally screwed.
“Here, I got you a drink,” Dex said, handing me something that looked like a martini and tasted like Clorox. (Not that I’ve ever swigged a mouthful of bleach. But you know what I mean.) “It’s a vodka gimlet,” he said. Then he led me out into the center of the living room, which was serving as a de facto dance floor.
Four drinks and a dozen slow dances later, we wound up on the balcony, huddled close despite the scorching June heat.
“I love being with you.”
I had a brief, stupid, girlie moment where I thought he was going to say he loved me. I have to admit I was a little relieved that he didn’t.
Dex started rambling. “I think it’s awesome to find a girl who’s so confident about her body. Most of the chicks I’ve dated have been toothpicks. I touch them and I feel like they’ll break. Not you, though. You’re a real woman.”
I wasn’t sure whether to take this as a compliment or an insult. He’d basically just called me chubby, but in the context it suddenly didn’t sound like such a bad thing. I squeezed his hand. “Thanks.”
It was weird how, after being with him for a while, I kind of forgot who he was. The shock of it began to wear off. Instead of focusing on thoughts of Oh my God I’m here with the world famous Dex Holcombe! I just relaxed and let myself get swept up in the moment.
Which is probably why I let it happen.
“Let’s go,” Dex said, “somewhere we can be alone.” He steered me out onto the balcony and I didn’t resist. “God, you look great tonight,” he said, stroking my face with his fingers. He pushed a lock of my red hair off my cheek.
“Thanks,” I said. I felt dizzy, and my body tingled. I couldn’t tell if it was from the drinks or his touch. I decided on the latter.
Dex leaned forward, until our faces were practically touching. “I thought I’d never get you alone,” he whispered. I could feel his breath tickling my ear and it made me giddy.
Before I could say anything it happened.
